Importing If you need to import a large amount or variety of media, or to import from analog media such as VHS tape, click the Import button near the top of the application window to open the Importer. See Chapter The Importer on page for full information. Quick import: The Quick Import button at the top left of the Library opens a Windows file dialog for fast import of files from a hard drive or other local storage. New folders in the corresponding media categories photos, video, audio and projects are created for the files specified.
In addition, the imported items are included in the Last Import Collection. The new items are immediately displayed in the Collection Latest Import, which is created for the occasion if necessary. Exporting directly from the Library Any photo, video, audio file or project in the Main Library can be directly exported as is, using the context menu commands described below, to either a Cloud-based storage service or a disc. For other exporting options, use the Exporter instead, by selecting the asset and clicking the Export tab at the top of the window.
See Chapter The Exporter on page for full information. To store a Library asset on a disc, select Burn Disc on the context menu. You can burn just the file, or a disc image if you have made one. If you select multiple assets, and then select Burn Disc, all of the assets will appear on the Burn files to disc dialog. More assets can be added by clicking the File icon and browsing. You can also delete files from the list before burning. Removing items from the Library To remove an item from the Library, or a selection containing multiple items, choose Delete selected from the context menu or press the Delete key.
A confirmation dialog lets you approve the list of media files to be removed from the Library database. By default, the files themselves will not be affected, but the Remove from library and delete option lets you delete the files too, if desired.
Be careful, as this command works on all kinds of Library assets, including your Pinnacle Studio projects if any of those are selected. When all the files in a folder are removed, the Library hides the folder as well.
However, this is not automatic and you will be asked if you want to keep your current assets listed in the Library, but still stop monitoring the location. The Browser This is the area in which the Library displays its media assets the videos, photos, audio, projects, collections and content that are available for you to use in your movie and disc projects.
The items are displayed either as a list of text records or as a grid of icons. Visual asset types use thumbnail images for their icons; other types use graphic symbols. The Library would not be much help if the Browser displayed all its assets at once. It therefore has several controls that help you screen out items that aren t relevant to your purpose.
See Choosing what to display below for details. Controlling the Browser display A group of controls in the Library s footer bar provides general functions for managing the way assets are presented in the Browser. The info button, available in the main Library only, toggles the display of a panel across the bottom of the Browser pane where details about the current asset are displayed, such as its caption, file name, rating, and any tags or comments associated with it.
The information may be edited, and for some assets, you can also open the corrections tools by clicking the gear icon on the top left corner of the pane. While this button is active, items in the Browser represent the individual scenes in a particular video, not the entire asset as usual. See The Library preview on page 40 for more information.
In the main Library, this and the next two buttons are grouped at right between the info button and the zoom slider. In the compact Library, the three buttons are placed at left. The thumbnails view button switches to viewing assets as thumbnails rather than as text lines.
A pop-up checklist associated with the button lets you select the readouts and controls that will appear beside thumbnails in the Browser. The details view button switches to the alternative viewing mode, in which each asset appears as a text listing.
The popup checklist with this button selects the text fields to be displayed. The zoom slider lets you magnify the thumbnails to get a closer look, or pull back for a wider view. This slider is always found at the right-hand end of the footer bar. Thumbnails and details Each asset is displayed in the Library Browser in one of two formats, depending on the view selected. Pinnacle Studio 18 is a digital imagining creatively software suite that sits at the mid-range section of software. Among many of its features it offers the ability to add soundtracks, remove unwanted noise from media, and live screen capture and a host of video editing tools and utilities. The software does seem to offer more than rivals Studio Pro X7, Cyberlink PowerDirector to name a few and it is refreshing easy to hit the ground running with a good user interface with three options "Organise" "Edit" and "Author" however some may feel a bit overwhelmed by all the options on offer.
There are a number of bugs and issues with Pinnacle Studio however they have been quick to release patches to fix any problems found. In terms of performance it doesn't offer the best bang per buck and rival software does seem to cope with rendering quicker and more easily. Installation was also slow and painful with mandatory registration throwing up problems. I was also disappointed with the rather limited 14 day support where rivals offer a month sometimes more. There are the makings of an excellent video suite here with some very useful features; however it's not quite up to the standard yet.
I would have expected by "version 18" that Pinnacle had ironing out some common problems but that remains to be seen. Have a think about your requirements before buying and have a look at whets on offer elsewhere to save any disappointment.
This is a comprehensive set of tools but if all you want to do is cut out poor footage, stitch clips together, add a title and a few transitions, it's way over the top. I suspect most people fall into that camp.
On the other hand, if you want to invest effort into making quality movies, it offers a powerful editing suite. I had no problems installing or running it but the interface is overwhelming. Once I'd invested time into finding my way round, though, I realised it was very complete and logically laid out. I liked having just about everything at hand on a single screen but it certainly isn't suitable for beginners or casual users. It needs a fairly powerful processor and plenty of RAM too - it struggled on my old laptop but is fine on my i5 8GB machine.
Once you become familiar with the program, you realise that almost everything you need is easily accessible. It's just that there's a steep learning curve and, unless you use it regularly, you might have to do some re-learning every time you fire it up. There are plenty of really useful touches and a few innovations such as the clever preview panel hard to explain without images. The Organiser is excellent, allowing you to tag and star-rate clips.
Effects and transitions are very nicely implemented. Rendering is fast, or certainly faster than Premiere Elements This seems to be a very complete package.
If you're new to video editing or have only basic requirements, it isn't for you. For anyone into advanced video editing, Pinnacle Studio 18, with its comprehensive feature set, could be ideal. Where to start? I've been a fan and user of Pinnacle Studio products for many years, at least from Version 7 and maybe earlier, but that puts it at around the year I started with the product line and before that I've used VHS based systems, so I think I'm reasonably qualified to comment.
Video editing always puts demands on a PC and as such it a matter of fact that you just have to get along with the idea the program will occasionally crash but over the years I've managed well and my last Pinnacle Studio version was 12 Ultimate running on a fairly powerful PC under Windows 8. It was quite stable with few crashes and generally if it did the program would recover the file and you could carry on from where it crashed.
So far so good; but then I upgraded my PC to Windows 10 64 bit and Pinnacle 12 didn't like that environment and was very unstable so I decided to upgrade. I must admit I didn't do a lot of pre-purchase investigation, confident in the knowledge that Pinnacle would deliver the goods in a stable package and having bought the Version 18 Plus upgrade in mid August was looking forward to using the new UI and facilities.
For the first few weeks I used it on a couple of basic edits and finding it was crashing rather too frequently went on line and found 2 significant patches, unfortunately these created as many problems as they were supposed to fix as now the program wouldn't import my DV tape media and still crashed left right and centre whenever it felt like it.
Almost any part of the program would cause it crash, moving scenes, editing scene duration, adding titles, adding transitions, just about everything. I have literally spent days trying to get this program to work anywhere near as it should, and if you do some research into Pinnacle Studio 18 problems you will find that many other people are having exactly the same problems.
Just bear in mind that to download the program, patches and content, uninstall and re-install takes around 4 to 5 hours and I've done this too many times. Eventually I was losing the will to live so held my hands up and said, "OK, I'm beat, I give up, I can't get it to run, even with the best support that Pinnacle can offer" and asked Pinnacle for a refund.
